Imprint of Hill and Habitat

Today – Rocks

Patty and I have been spending quite a lot of time at Tegg’s Nose looking closely at the surroundings. We are preparing for an exhibition, Imprint of Hill and Habitat, later this year inspired by the park. There is so much variety in the area such as plants, geology, machinery and people. So far have visited in autumn and winter, done some drawings on site and also photographs as reference for further work at home. It has been great fun to highlight the interesting things in a place so close to home ( and of course sample the delights of the cafe!). I plan to put some work regularly on the website and so this is the first of several…… today rocks

This is a drawing of some of the stones in a wall on the walk down to the reservoir. I had prepared the sketchbook with some papers, this one had been monoprinted over pine needles. The drawing is done with graphite and crayons and was inspired by some Henry Moore drawings I had seen at Yorkshire Sculpture Park!

This is a drawing done with felt tipped pen sitting at the bottom of the quarry. I have floated a background into it with photoshop which gives it much more interest and substance. It is a new format sketchbook for me and the long thin shape lends itself well to this project.

This is done on another page that has been prepared with paper partially painted with gesso. The layers of rock are done from a photo in pencil and crayon. I am interested in the shapes and the layers.
