This week’s challenge is Negative Space. For photographers this is about creating empty space to emphasise the main subject. In art however the artist draws the spaces around the image. This technique can produce some fascinating images as well as more abstract pictures.
I have again used a photo that has been in my folder wiating for a project. I took it in London and it is Plane trees in winter that have been cut back. The shapes are so interesting and I think it is a good choice for this challenge.
The background has been done with Dr Martin’s watercolour and the then the spaces filled in with graphite. The watercolour was not quite as claen and bright as I had hoped partly because the paper in my book is just not quite high enough quality. I still think it works well and it adds to the little run of more abstract images over the last month that I am quite pleased with.
